Have you ever felt lost in the world, not sure where to turn, who to look to, or what to do?
Whenever Loyola University Chicago students feel like they need some guidance, they turn to their university for help because of its focus on Jesuit values.
Although Loyola and its students' lives are surrounded by Jesuit values, many people outside of the Loyola may not know what exactly Jesuit values are.
What is a Jesuit Value?
Loyola prides itself on how they "prepare people to lead extraordinary lives that are grounded in the pursuit of justice, knowledge and faith." Loyola hopes that "creating an environment of support that is built on our deeply held values and beliefs creates opportunities for students who will go on to make the world a better place for all of humanity." In sum, Loyola wishes for its students to be guided by "knowledge, reason, faith, and commitment to excellence."
All of these inspiring sentiments can be found on Loyola's website, linked above. These words of wisdom are just scratching the surface of the influence that Jesuit values have on life at Loyola.
There are five main values that Jesuits in higher education center themselves around. To better understand these values, I have created an infographic using the website Canva:
Loyola Students and Jesuit Values
Loyola's students are said to encounter these values on a day-to-day basis, as they are incorporated into every aspect of the Loyola culture.
Although some students attend Loyola coming from a Catholic or Jesuit background, Loyola is welcoming and peaceful and towards all religious affiliations on campus. Loyola Campus Ministry provides many faith based programs and often parters with faith based organizations outside of Loyola to help every student meet their individual needs regarding their religious beliefs. Loyola Campus Ministry is very dedicated and "committed to to supporting students to grow in their faith traditions."
In fact, Loyola Campus Ministry asks everyone that is interested to attend their inclusive Catholic mass at Madonna Della Strada Chapel on Loyola's Lake Shore Campus. Madonna della Strada invites students to "celebrate their faith and discover its depth and richness by connecting with others, engaging in service opportunities and growing in spirituality."

To delve deeper into Loyola's Jesuit values in relation to its student body, I spoke with two Loyola undergraduate students. These students illustrated more about how Jesuit values have touched their lives both on and off campus.
The first student I spoke with was sophomore Emma Meyer, an advertising and public relations major, and marketing minor, who believes she has put Loyola's Jesuit values into "action with helping other people outside of the Loyola community, and also within it."
Next, I met with junior Libby Stitzel, also an advertising and public relations major, with minors in art history and photography. Stitzel reminisced on a previous semester when times got tough for her personally, so she used her knowledge in Jesuit values to remind herself that "everything is happening for a reason, [and] God has a plan."
Take a look at the multimedia video I created using iMovie to find out more about these students and their stories:
Overall, Loyola University Chicago has a lot of exciting draws to it, including that it is in the heart of the nation's third largest city, and it located on a breathtaking campus right next to Lake Michigan. But, it seems as though Loyola's Jesuit values are what these students will most take away from their experience at this enlightening university.
